11.08.06: Low Smoke or not Low Smoke?:
There is a large amount of confusion with regards to the question of what “low smoke products” are.

Zero Halogen and a UL94-V0 does not mean that the products are low smoke. All Ter-mate’s products are UL94-V0 with the majority being Zero Halogen, the exception is standard flexible busbar, however a Halogen free version is available.

UL94 is a standard in which materials are tested to see how they perform in a flame, the way the material burns is recorded . a V0 rating refers to the fact that whilst under the effect of the flame should the material drip flammable material below the sample is not ignited and once the flame is removed, the material self extinguishes.

When we refer to “LOW SMOKE” this refers to the standards used for MOD, London Underground and Channel Tunnel applications. The Standards we quote are a French standards NFF-16 101 & 102, these are where the material is tested and the fumes produced are assessed for toxicity and colour (the clearer the smoke the better). This then is reported as a I and F rating, I0, F0 is the best.

The Low Smoke insulators, Power Terminals and supports we offer are I0,F1 and the Terminals, Pillars and Cygnus ranges of products are I2,F3.

Please also note the colour of a product does not specifically mean it is low smoke, Our Grey insulators are the low smoke versions of our standard insulators, however there are grey products on the market that are not Low Smoke.
